The Junior Opera Guild (JOG) is a community service organization created in 1968 by the Young Patronesses of the Opera for the purpose of stimulating knowledge and appreciation of opera by high school students. Our members are dynamic, enthusiastic, and intelligent young men and women in grades 9-12.
JOG combines social and educational activities in its efforts to encourage the civic, cultural, and organizational responsibilities of its young members. The members raise funds to support opera educational programs; they attend meetings and learn the importance of working as a group, handling a budget, and more. The members also usher at various professional opera performances in Miami.
All JOG members are required to attend at least four of the monthly group meetings, including some which are exciting social events, the Opera Preview, the end of year Brunch and the Family Holiday Party. In addition, the members produce a fall fundraiser/project, volunteer at YPO’s Girl Scout Workshop and the Voice Competition and participate in their annual spring fundraiser.
For many years, JOG has made several significant contributions to support YPO’s Opera Funtimes, In-School Opera, and Voice Competition, as well as to the Young Artist Studio/Florida Grand Opera Ensemble and the University of Miami opera program.
YPO members act as advisors to JOG, but emphasize that the JOG members themselves are fully responsible for electing officers and planning and executing the arrangements for all of their activities. Membership is open to all interested girls and boys in grades 9 – 12. If you know someone who would be interested in joining JOG, please contact one of the Advisors at
