Roberta was a founding member of YPO, served as our second president, and was an educator, patron, musician, and visionary who shared the joy of opera with everyone. Roberta laid the foundation for many of YPO’s programs, including Opera Previews, Junior Opera Guild, Girl Scout Previews, Teachers’ Workshops, and Opera Funtime. The formation of FGO ensured the production of grand opera of exceptional artistic quality in two performing arts centers in South Florida. As a long time supporter of the Florida Grand Opera, YPO was awarded the Roberta Balfe Leadership Golden Patron Award in 1993 for having made a lifetime contribution to FGO of over $1,000,000. Because of its many achievements, YPO continues to be one of the most active and successful volunteer groups in the arts community. Since its inception, nearly 500,000 elementary children in South Florida have viewed our professional opera programs such as Hansel and Gretel, Papageno, Cinderella, Pied Piper, and more. Many of these children would never have a chance to experience this genre of the arts if it weren’t for the YPO program. We bring the performances to elementary schools in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties for free. Funding is provided through grants, fundraising events, and donations. Todaro, (seen left). Louise was an accomplished musician, actress, and director, and produced the In-School Opera for over 30 years (1975-2006). She was instrumental in forming many of our education programs and providing thousands of children with the experience of musical performance. In 2007, Louise became Producer Emeritus and handed the reigns over to her daughter, Julie, who served as the Executive Producer until 2022. Julie now serves as the Executive Producer Advisor and works with an amazing all-volunteer production team. The premiere performances took place in the Miami-Dade County Auditorium, on November 3-4, 1973, under the direction of Dr. Warren Broome and was produced by Roberta Rymer Balfe. It was performed throughout the United States many times over the next decade. In April of 2010, the Young Patronesses of the Opera brought it back to the stage thanks to Julie Todaro, YPO’s 2009-10 President. What a thrill it was to perform “Daisy” again at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium, where it premiered almost 40 years earlier for an audience of over 6,000 middle school children and Girl Scouts. It was produced and co-directed by Ms. Todaro and co-directed by Dr. Warren Broome (the original director). It was dedicated to Julie’s mother (Louise P. Todaro) who was involved in the original production as a past president of YPO and current President the Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida in 1973. Singers compete in two divisions: Senior (ages 26 - 30) and Junior (ages 20 - 25). Approximately 15 to 20 singers are invited to participate in the semi-final round of the competition. Many of the participating singers are students or graduates of leading voice programs throughout the world and have significant performance experience as members of young artist programs. Judges select up to 10 singers to advance to the final round. All participants in the final round win at least $1,000, with top prizes of $10,000 for the Senior division and $7,500 for the Junior division. The YPO Voice Competition Committee is responsible for reviewing applications, selecting the semifinalists and appointing qualified judges for the audition process.
